Sam Tee is 20 days into a walk around Australia to raise funds for the Stroke Recovery Trial Fund. He began in Melbourne and hopes to arrive back in that city in 420 to 440 days.

Joining Mr Tee on the Stroll 4 Stroke Walk is friend Matt Rothwell and his dog Cash.

Three years ago, at age 29, Mr Tee had a stroke after a workout at his local gym.

While he is now in good health, he is determined to help others in their recovery from stroke. 

“Having a stroke can happen to anyone, I was probably in the best shape of my life when it happened to me,” Mr Tee said.

“I want to help people with their recovery. I know it can be a tough time and you can get down. But if you keep working and have a good routine then you can get to a good position with your health and wellbeing.”

Whilst in town, Mr Tee took the opportunity to meet with the Warrnambool Stroke Support Group at the Botanic Gardens. 

A member of the group, Jenny Pearce, had a stroke in July.

Ms Pearce said the stroke support group has played a big role in her recovery.

“Being part of the group is very reassuring,” she said.

“If I am unsure about something, I can ring someone from the group and have a chat. We have all been through that experience of having a stroke and it is great to be able to help each other when we can.”

Ms Pearce said meeting Mr Tee during his visit to Warrnambool was exciting. 

She said what he has been able to achieve was a great example of the value of hard work in the recovery process.

“Listening to what Sam has been able to do is certainly very inspiring,” she said.

“It makes you realise that having a stroke does not have to stop you doing amazing things.”

South West Healthcare stroke liaison clinical nurse consultant Patrick Groot said having a stroke can lead to disengagement and social isolation. He praised Mr Tee for promoting strategies to reduce the negative impacts of stroke.
