A touring party of more than 50 players and support crew made the trip to New Zealand last weekend to take part in the Jenny Mair Highland Square Day competition.
The competition was held in Palmerston North, a city of 85,000 on New Zealand’s North Island.
The Warrnambool Pipe Band was the only one of the 20 competing bands that came from outside New Zealand.
The band won pipe and drum corp sections at the competition.
The band included both junior and adult members.
Band member Peter Moir said the competition drew a high level of performers.
“The competitions covered bands from level four to one with one being the highest,” he said.
“There were four grade one bands so it was a great opportunity for our players to see these world-class performers up close.
“We had four days together in New Zealand and it was a great bonding experience. With things like this, you get to have a lot of fun and you also learn along the way.”
It was a great opportunity for our players to see these world-class performers up close.
