But with a passion for the game lingering, the decision to nominate for Hampden league president was an easy call.

Ross was elected president unopposed at the league’s annual general meeting on Monday night.

While his rise to the Hampden league’s top job was faster than anticipated, Ross said he was itching to get started.

“Since I’ve finished up with playing, because I had a few injuries, I’ve just wanted to be involved with local footy,” he told The Standard.

“I always thought I’d like to become a president. Pete (Watson) probably finished a little earlier than we expected but the opportunity just arose.

“I look forward to the challenge, and I can’t wait to work with all the clubs.”

He took the reins from Peter Watson, who stepped down completely after a one-season as president and five-year stint on the league’s executive.

Ross felt the league was in strong shape – despite an operating loss of $11,106 – and said his role was to foster its growth into the future.

“We do have a premier league. It doesn’t matter if things are happening behind the scenes, we still run a very good show,” he said.

“It’s about making sure our governance is in order. We have to make sure we’re promoting ourselves and the brand as best we can.

“It’s about getting people to play at that top level of football and netball. I want to help grow facilities and to work with government.”
