South Warrnambool and reigning four-time premier Koroit will lock horns in the historic fixture, which is expected to be held at Victoria Park.
The decision was revealed at the Hampden league’s annual general meeting on Monday night.
Newly-elected Koroit president Steve Hoy said fixture was a major coup for the town.
“South (Warrnambool) is trending upwards, so we’d expect a huge crowd and it will be a great atmosphere,” Hoy said.
“It’s an unofficial kick off for the season. It’s not the official launch, but it’s a curtain-raiser for what is to come.
“It’s definitely something to be excited about. It presented a great opportunity for us. We see South as a great partner to pioneer this with.”
Koroit delegate Maree Lane said it was important for the fixture to honour Good Friday’s emphasis on family.
The Standard understands the clubs have entered into a two-year deal, with the 2019 fixture to be held at South Warrnambool’s Friendly Societies Park.
South Warrnambool vice president Rod Donnelly was excited about the opportunity to showcase the league on a culturally significant day.
“We’re hoping the bigger and wider footy community comes out to support it,” Donnelly said.
