Having entered the Test arena late last year, Handscomb is still averaging more than 47 with the bat but has had an underwhelming season to date. In particular the effectiveness of his batting stance in which he stands deep in his crease has come into question after just 62 runs from three innings so far in the Ashes series.

Despite Australia leading the series 2-0, Handscomb looks vulnerable to losing his spot for Thursday's Test at the WACA Ground after West Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh was added to the Australian squad. Marsh has come into the mix for a recall despite averaging less than 22 with the bat and more than 37 with the ball from 21 Tests.

Australian coach Darren Lehmann said on Sunday that the state of the notoriously bouncy Perth pitch would shape the composition of the XI.

In any case Warne - the most prolific bowler in Australia's Test history - said Handscomb needed a spell away from the Test spotlight. "I know Australia would like to keep a winning team together, but unfortunately Handscomb needs to go back to shield cricket urgently & sort his technique out !!!" Warne tweeted on Monday, even though the next round of Sheffield Shield cricket does not begin until February because of the Big Bash League window.

"So Marsh must play on his home patch in Perth," Warne added.

Speaking on Monday, WA coach Justin Langer said to expect plenty of spring from the Perth deck despite the ground lacking the extreme bounce of yesteryear. "I think it'll suit the Australian players, if you look traditionally, Australia are very hard to beat here, particularly with the extra bounce," Langer said.

"It hasn't been as fast as we've talked about for probably 20 years to be honest, but there's the bounce there, and with the sea breeze if it swings around a bit, I think the extra bounce will suit our Australian players and hopefully be tough on the England players.

"Even though we say it's not as quick as it has been, it's quicker than most pitches in the world. So we probably take it for granted a little bit, but the extra bounce is usually what brings opposition teams unstuck, not so much the pace, but just the extra bounce. If it swings around a bit, there's a bit of green grass on it, hopefully it's a good, even contest."

Langer was reluctant to buy into the state of the English camp despite their on-field predicament being amplified by persistent off-field dramas, the latest of which was batsman Ben Duckett being stood down for the weekend's tour match in Perth after tipping beer on paceman James Anderson's head.

"Australia are playing really well, their bowling attack is world class, probably as good as we've seen for a very long time," Langer said.

"With Nathan Lyon bowling so well, it just reminds me of when Warney was bowling well and when you've got Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee or Jason Gillespie it's just such a well-rounded attack at the moment. That's tough for any opposition, and especially at the Gabba, especially at the WACA, saw it last week in Adelaide so I'm not so focused on how England are going, I just see how strong Australia are at the moment."
