For the past 14 years, two volunteers from Western District Employment Access (WDEA) have attended the school each Friday to help with student lunches.
Jodie Knights has been helping at the school for the whole 14 years the program has been in action while Bernie Cornford has been active in the role for a number of years.
The program will not continue next year. The school paid tribute to Ms Knights and Mr Cornford at the school’s assembly on Monday.
Merrivale Primary School principal Susan Farrell said pupils and staff wanted to farewell the pair in style.
“We are disappointed the WDEA program will be discontinued next year, it has been a big part of our school for the past 14 years,” Ms Farrell said.
“Jodie has been coming for so long she is like a member of the staff and Bernie has also fitted in so well.
“The children think they are great, they know what an important role they play in the everyday life of the school.
“The children are always polite, respectful and friendly to any visitors we have to the school.
“We all value the work of our volunteers, it is a big commitment. We hope we have been able to provide important and worthwhile weekly outings for Jodie and Bernie, it has been a great program for all involved.”
