The new place name, pronounced “Woo-room-bit Beer-ng Yar” stems from the Dhauwurdwurrung/Peekwurrung meaning for “long waterhole”.
The Friends of Jubilee Park, with the assistance of Elder Rob Lowe, Joel Wright from the Victorian Aboriginal Language Corporation and the Gunditj Mirring, Kuuyang Maar and Eastern Maar groups, submitted a joint naming request to the Warrnambool City Council.
It was proposed to officially recognise the site’s Aboriginal heritage.
The request was agreed to in June 2016 and was subsequently officially adopted by the Office of Geographic Names.
A bluestone and timber seat has also been constructed and installed in the playground at the reserve to acknowledge and pay respect to the traditional custodians of the land – past and present - within the maar nation.
