The South West TAFE fapprentice was presented with the Rotary Club of Warrnambool East First Year Apprentice Award at the service organisation’s dinner.
Matthew, 20, was one of four students to be nominated by their teachers for excellence in their trade and dedication to their studies and it was his desire to succeed as a chef which made him stand out as the winner.
He is working at Western District Health Services and has been offered the opportunity to work alongside other chefs in the region.
The four students were interviewed by Rotarians Bill Hewett and Wendy Mitchem and a South West TAFE staff member.
The award was judged on how students were progressing in their course, their willingness to learn, how they positively represented their trade and how they could be encouraged to continue their studies.
The judging panel was impressed by all students and their focus on creating successful careers for themselves.
Second place was awarded to electrical apprentice Brendan Chatfield and achievement awards went to automotive apprentice Kel Archbold and carpentry apprentice Keegan Picken.
Rotarian Bill Hewett said all the candidates showed incredible enthusiasm in their trades and had bright futures ahead of them.
Mr Hewett said Warrnambool East Rotary Club had offered the award for many years and continued to provide ongoing support to training apprentices in the region.
South West TAFE chief Mark Fidge said the organisation was grateful for the partnership with Rotary in supporting apprentices.
“It’s invaluable to have the ongoing support of the Rotary Club of Warrnambool East and the encouragement this award gives to our first year apprentices,” he said.
