The Essendon premiership player announced his resignation from the club’s executive on Wednesday.
It will take effect at the Bombers’ annual general meeting next month.
Heffernan said the club was well-positioned for on-field success in coming seasons.
“The club is very special to me, and I will always do what I can to assist,” Heffernan said
“It was an honour to play for Essendon, and the same goes for being appointed to serve on the board.
“I’m optimistic they’ll be rewarded with some on-field success in the not-to-distant future.
“It’s not a given, it will require a lot of hard work (and luck) but our foundations are strong and I’m confident we are well positioned.”
Heffernan played 123 games for the Bombers and was a member of the club’s 2000 premiership team.
The 38-year-old was the second overall pick in the 1996 national draft.
He spent three seasons at Melbourne, from 2003 until 2005, playing 43 games and booting 10 goals before returning to Essendon in 2006.
