Cr Hulin described a decision to postpone the Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycling Classic as a “very sad day”.
The 122-year-old race won’t take place in 2018 as a result of reforms to Cycling Australia’s National Road Series.
“This is absolutely a very serious situation,” Cr Hulin said.
“I believe that Warrnambool City Council could have worked much closer with the road race committee because there is huge potential in this event.
“We talk about bringing major events to our city, and if this isn’t a major event, I don’t know what is.”
Cr Hulin first raised the idea of a week-long cycling festival to revitalise the race in 2015.
Cr Hulin said while no sole body was to blame for the Melbourne to Warrnambool’s difficulties, he felt council “hadn’t taken it seriously enough”.
