The owner of Timor Street’s Water Lily House said being asked for ‘happy endings’ was now becoming a weekly occurrence and she and her staff were fed up.
After moving her business from her home on Raglan Parade to a shop space in a laneway off Timor Street, the mother-of-three from Khao Lak said she just wanted to feel safe and comfortable in her workplace.
“I was only asked once when my business was at my home,” she said. “Now I move here, I am asked all the time.”
Water Lily House Traditional Thai massage moved to its new premises in December 2016.
Mrs Brocklehurst said her four female staff members were now being asked for ‘extra services’ “at least once a week”.
“It is not good for my staff,” she said. “I tell my staff to walk away. I don’t care about the money.”
Despite her promotional material stating her business provided a non-sexual service, Mrs Brocklehurst said the sexual requests continued.
“We have five rooms here, all rooms have signs,” she said. “I always say when they ask on the phone or when they come for massage ‘no we only massage’.
“You want other thing you go to another shop.”
Mrs Brocklehurst said she was frustrated and saddened that her business faced this harassment frequently.
“I love my job,” she said. “I feel happy when people say ‘I come to Pai because she is good to my family and friends’.
“They tell me they feel better, no more sore neck or back.
“But this asking for happy endings makes me angry.
“You don’t say something like that, that make me uncomfortable.”
Mrs Brocklehurst said she believed her nationality was not to blame for the sexual advances.
“No, I think anyone who work in massage then maybe men will ask these things,” she said.
After two-and-a-half years of building her business, Mrs Brocklehurst vows to protect Water Lily’s unblemished record.
“I take care when I have new staff. I don’t want one of them to take the money for this because I don’t want to risk my reputation,” she said.
