The Seagulls, who returned to the training track on Monday night, have retained the bulk of their list, including Maskell Medal runner-up Jackson Hollmer.
Nicholson said the Seagulls needed to knuckle down if they were to push for a drought-breaking flag in 2018.
“Everyone is still hurting a little bit from the loss (to Koroit),” he said.
“But the worst thing we can do is sook about it.”
Nicholson said the Seagulls were comfortable with their list, which will include swingman Matt Sully returning as an assistant coach.
“We’ve lost Robbie Hare to Allansford and we’re not sure about Guy Phelps at this stage,” he said.
“With work, it’s a big commitment to come down from Melbourne each week and he’s been coming for three years now.
“We’ll leave it up to him.”
Midfielder-forward Nicholson, who booted 72 goals from 18 matches in 2017, feels ready to take on the Seagulls’ coaching role.
He is hoping to streamline the club’s selection process for all grades to help “make everyone feel a little bit more involved and valued”.
“Everyone is held accountable, even myself,” Nicholson said.
“I think I have a fair handle on it (the coaching aspect). I will need good people around me to help me out but if all the structures are in place I should be fine.”
