Work to remove Port Fairy’s iconic cypress trees on James Street has begun.

Contractors were on site on Monday to remove the 20 cypress trees, which were planted sometime between 1927 and World War II.
The decision to remove the trees, between Campbell Street and Ocean Drive, came after safety concerns from residents and people who used the street.
Moyne Shire’s director of physical services Trev Greenberger said in May that the condition of the James Street cypress trees was identified as a risk in a street tree management plan done in 2014 but money for the trees’ removal had not been available until now.
James Street will remain closed until November 28 while work to remove the trees are completed.
It will be partially closed from November 28 until December 8. People will still be able to access Southcombe Caravan Park.
A council spokesman said council would consider a decision about replacement trees at its next meeting on November 28.
He said council received more than 160 submissions regarding the choice of species and location for the planting of new trees. Planting of the new trees is expected to occur in autumn.
