NURSES picketed some of the district’s major hospitals as part of the state-wide strike by the nursing fraternity in November, 1986.
During the peak of the strike, 28 nurses, well below the normal number on duty, serviced more than 100 patients at Warrnambool Base Hospital.
While nurses admitted to being “worn out’ by fewer members delivering the same level of service, they said they were determined to do big hours to ensure a better long-term deal.
“The strike isn’t so much over getting more money as being recognised for our skills,” one nurse said at the time.
Management at Warrnambool, Portland and Hamilton insisted the strike was having little effect despite staffing levels being down to a minimum.
