The son of Smart Missile makes his racecourse debut in an eight-horse field for Bowman in the $120,000 Merson Cooper Stakes at Sandown on Saturday.
The Warrnambool-based trainer said Mumbles had prepared well for the 1000-metre race.
“He’s come to hand pretty quick,” Bowman said.
“He’s been a quick learner. He’s ready to race after the jump-outs at Mortlake and Warrnambool.
“We could have saved Mumbles for another two-year-old race at Caulfield in three weeks but he’s ready to go, so we thought let’s have a throw at the stumps.
“He’s a well-bred colt who has plenty of upside. I’ll be happy if he can run in the first five at his debut.”
Last-start Mornington maiden winner Leila’s Star jumps in class to a $120,000 three-year-old race for Peter Chow in the Twilight Glow Stakes. Aaron Purcell tackles the $250,000 Sandown Guineas with a two-pronged attack. Black Sail and Villermont are under double figure odds in the Group 3 race.
Darren Weir’s Warrnambool satellite stable has strong representation.
