“I personally gave a commitment before the last election that I would vote in-line with the results of the survey, and I will honour that commitment,” Mr Tehan said.

South West Coast MP Roma Britnell said the result must be respected and the law needed to change swiftly.

"I’m proud that the vast majority of Western Victorians, like the rest of our nation, have spoken so strongly in favour of treating everyone, no matter their sexual orientation, with respect and equality," she said.

"I know this campaign has been tough for some people, but please take solace in this result and know the majority in our community and our nation back your right to love who you choose."

Safe in the South West project officer Shane Hernan said community members and staff gathered at Brophy Family and Youth Services to listen to the result.

“When it was announced there was tears, cheers, celebrations and applause,” he said. “It was amazing to have a space where people could feel relieved and happy. The whole of Australia was pretty much having an opinion on your personal life, which has a huge impact. We know there has been an increase of 20 plus per cent for mental health services, especially for young people.” 

Warrnambool Art Gallery also hosted a small group of people who came together to listen to the result.

Curator Ren Gregoric said people “came in together and they were really looking after each other”.

“I think people were nervous, but they were very happy there was a yes outcome. There was a really positive vibe.”
