The Warrnambool Primary School student threw three personal best shots on his way to winning gold at the School Sport Victoria track and field championships on Monday.
His 13.01m final throw propelled him to victory in the 11-year-old boys’ section.
“It feels good because my brother (Ayden) in 2014 made it as well,” Jesse said of his achievement.
“I am proud of myself and just excited. I first started training with my brother because he’s older than me and went through before me, mainly with discus, but the year I first started with shot put I realised I was pretty good at it.”
Jesse had three throws to qualify for the eight-person finals.
“On my first throw I threw 12.49m which was a PB in competition. I was coming first place when I threw that,” he said. The kid who threw after me, threw 12.58m, so he was in first and I was in second.
“On my second throw I only threw a bit over 11 metres and then I had my third throw and I threw 12.50m, so that was one centimetre better than my first one.
“The top eight got another throw. I threw a 13.01m.
“I didn’t get to see his throw (because I was preparing for the 4x100m relay) but the kid that came second to me, he only threw 7m because apparantely it slipped out of his fingers.”
St Pius Primary School’s Grace Kelly won silver in the 11-year-old girls’ 100m and Camperdown St Patrick’s Primary School’s Ruby Darcy claimed bronze in the 9-10 girls’ long jump.
