Spring racing celebrations will hit the Moyne Shire on Melbourne Cup Day with a range of events planned in the region.
The Heather Holcombe Memorial Melbourne Cup Day Luncheon has become an annual event on south-west residents’ calendars.
Organiser Julie Holcombe said the event at Port Fairy’s Star of the West Hotel, was in its 17th year.
The fundraiser is named in honour of Mrs Holcombe’s sister-in-law who lost her cancer battle in 2000 and attracts more than 100 people.
There are 30 major auction items and ten silent auction items, as well as raffles and sweeps throughout the day.
Event proceeds are donated to Moyne Health Services palliative care room in recognition of the care Heather received at the hospital.
The day was started by a group of local women and Heather’s children Sarah and Christopher to honour their mum.
Sarah said the support they received was incredible with residents and businesses giving generously. Last year’s event raised more than $13,000. To book call 5568 2291.
More than 100 people are expected to dress up for the Port Fairy Bowls Club Melbourne Cup luncheon on Tuesday, November 7.
Friends of Moyneyana House president Margaret Whitehead said the day included sweeps and raffles and prizes for the lady of the day and best hat.
Mrs Whitehead said this year’s event would be the last under its current leadership with its small group of organisers getting older.
She said she hoped another group would continue the successful event which raises about $2500 for Moyne Health Services each year. To book call Margaret by November 3 on 5568 1443.
The Port Fairy Belfast Lions Club will host its annual Cup Eve Dinner for local Lions groups on November 6. The evening includes drinks and nibbles, a phantom race call and raffles at the Port Fairy Senior Citizens Club from 7pm.
There will be a pre-Melbourne Cup coffee morning at St Brigid’s hall in Crossley on Monday, November 6 at 10 am. There will be a lucky door and best hat prizes awarded. Proceeds will be donated to the Sisters of The Good Samaritan Mission.
