After a disappointing opening weekend of South West Cricket Twenty20 matches, it was the Pelicans’ batsmen who set the tone early on Saturday.

Openers Eddie Lucas (79 runs) and Rohan Symes (84 not out) set Bookaar up beautifully against an understrength Camperdown, with Baker (13 not out) chipping in late to see his side to 3-189.

The Lakers, led by a knock of 40 from Ryan Robbins, tried to respond, but was restricted to 5-125 in reply.

In Bookaar’s second match against Cobden, Lucas (36) and Symes (38) again made strong starts, while Fraser Lucas (38), Michael Winzar (23 not out) and Henry Green (14 not out) also hit double figures.

“It was a bit of a change in attitude,” Baker said.

“We all sat down after the games last week and during the week at training and had a discussion about why we lost both games.”

Baker said the Pelicans focused on their batting and rotating the strike more, which they achieved on Saturday.

He was also pleased with the effort of his bowlers.

“They just bowled line and length – we bowled one side of the wicket most of the day – and really pitched it up,” Baker said.

Meanwhile, Mortlake kept its unbeaten start to the season intact with a 102-run win over Cobden – highlighted by an unbeaten 60 runs from opener Tyler Schafer – and a hard-fought 13-run win over Heytesbury Rebels.

The Rebels defeated Noorat by nine wickets in their earlier game. Noorat had better luck against Terang, winning by 22 runs.

Pomborneit won both its games, defeating Terang by 38 runs and Camperdown by 47 runs.
