Sunday is the final day to enter the public vote to name the $11 billion Metro Tunnel's five new stops, currently known as Arden, Parkville, CBD North, CBD South and Domain.

The government has received 36,000 entries and the vote closes at midnight.

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said suggestions reflected Melbourne's history. There were also more tongue-in-cheek offerings from popular TV shows The Simpsons and Game of Thrones.

"There's been suggestions that reflect the history, reflect the names of former governors of the state. There's names that reflect recent history with the win of Richmond Football Club in the recent AFL grand final," Ms Allan said.

"There are also names that reflect people's love of the Game of Thrones television series.

"We are going to be going through and assess all of these recommendations. It demonstrates that there is great interest, great keenness for people to get involved."

Game of Thrones-inspired station names include Winterfell, Stark and Tully. North Melbourne fans also wanted to have their say on the station that will be located a drop punt away from Arden Street Oval. They nominated the club's nickname, Shinboner, and previous players Glen Archer, Brent Harvey and Allen Aylett.

Also featured strongly werelandmarks such as Federation Square, the University of Melbourne and RMIT, St Paul's Cathedral, the Shrine of Remembrance and the State Library of Victoria.

Many people were keen to recognise Victoria's Aboriginal heritage with names such as Djadjawurung and Boonwurrung.

And it hasn't only been Victorians taking a chance at history making; more than 200 people from more than 50 countries, including the United States, Colombia, Iran and Myanmar, have also had a say.

Age readershave suggested Victorian Nobel prize laureates, geographical locations, names linked to Aboriginal culture, and community identities.

Some of the more tongue-in-cheek suggestions include Smashed Avo station and Station McStationface, the latter in honour of a public vote in Britain in which a polar research vessel was dubbed Boaty McBoatface.

Daniel Bowen from the Public Transport Users Association has said that while it might be tempting to name sites after celebrities or historic figures, the monikers should, most importantly, tell people where the stations are.

"These stations will be with us for decades, hopefully centuries to come, and it is important that the names help people trying to navigate their way around Melbourne," he said.

"What we don't want is another station name like Southern Cross, which is basically meaningless - it tells you nothing about where it is in the city."

People who suggest one of the names chosen will go into a draw to win a behind-the-scenes tour of the Metro Tunnel worksites and the massive tunnel boring machines, as well as an exclusive sneak peak at "their" station just before it opens to the public.

Victorians have until midnight to submit their station name suggestions at metrotunnel.vic.gov.au.
