Gurnett shot a final-round 78 to score a narrow two-shot win over runner-up Rodney Keane (80) on Saturday.
Third-placed Chris Dunn (78) finished four shots off the pace.
Teenage prospect Noah Best (84) rounded out the top four, finishing nine shots behind the winner.
Gurnett, who scored 308 across the four-round tournament, described the final round as “an interesting day”.
“There were some reasonable swings between players during the day,” he said.
“I think at one stage I was four in front and two holes later it was all gone and level pegging again.
“Later I got two or three in front and Rod hit a few birdies and it (the lead) was all gone again.”
Gurnett, who recovered after a triple bogey on the seventh hole, took a two-shot buffer approaching the 18th green.
“It was still on the line going into the last hole,” he said.
“I had to get the job done and it was a sense of relief.
“It means an awful lot to me to win a club championship at Port Fairy.
“It’s a terrific golf club with a great bunch of members.”
Aub Lake won the B grade title after a sudden-death playoff against Rob Bevan.
Both players finished with a 356 four-round total.
Ray Matthews finished one shot further back.
Adrian Crosier was a convincing 34-shot victor in C grade.
