Magistrate Cynthia Toose said she was "extremely skeptical" of excused provided by Paul Michael Mueller, 34, of no fixed address.
Mueller pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court to six counts of failing to comply with his sex offender register reporting obligations.
He was palced on the register after two cases involving having sex with girls aged under 16 years old.
Defence counsel Amanda Chambers said her client was surprised he was released from jail last time he appeared in court and put straight onto a community corrections order.
She said Mueller found himself homeless which led to his offending.
Ms Toose said she was extremely skeptical about the instructions that Mueller had given his solicitor.
She added she was concerned that Mueller had been living for some time with a two-year-old child.
Mueller was fined $200 and jailed for three months with 52 days counted as already served.
