Boom Time, a $51 hope with Cory Parish in the saddle, defeated Single Gaze and Johannes Vermeer to give the New Zealand-born jockey his first group one victory.

Humidor, trained at Darren Weir’s Warrnambool satellite stable, ran fifth, earning $100,000 in stake money for his connections in the gut-busting race while ‘Bool stablemate Amelie’s Star finished in 11th place.

Weir won four of the 10 races on the program.

Ulmann, trained at his ‘Warrnambool base, beat stablemate Burning Front in the Moonga Stakes while Weir’s other three winners Snitzepeg, Cliff’s Edge and Kiwia were trained at his Ballarat stable.

Warrnambool trainer Aaron Purcell was upbeat with the performance of Naantali to run second behind Our Crown Witness in a $120,000 three-year-old race.

Naantali, having only her second start after scoring an impressive maiden win at Cranbourne last month, began too well in Saturday’s race, according to Purcell.

“I didn’t think she would jump and lead,” he said.

“I thought she might have raced behind the leaders but she just jumped and led. I think being inexperienced may have cost her the race. She’s got a very bright future. We’ll wait a few days before planning her next start.”

Warrnambool’s other runner, the Matthew Williams-trained Turnitaround, was unplaced in the Coongy Handicap.
