Magnificent weather on Saturday heralded the start of the Western District Bowls Division pennant season. I must say, from a personal point of view, it felt strange not starting with the rest of the competition as Warrnambool Gold sat out the start of the season with a bye, along with Dennington Red and Terang Green.

Tuesday pennant also started with temperatures reaching 31 degrees throughout the day.
City Memorial women’s 100 Up final was played last week, with Kate Lloyd defeating Mary Graham.
In a one-sided match, Matt Stewart defeated Barry Crisp in the men’s 100 up at Lawn Tennis. Cathy Finn won the women’s 100 up, defeating Rose Alderman. Finn drew her last bowl to get four points and take the win 103 to 98.
The division over 60 men’s pairs were played on Wednesday at Terang. The six section winners will begin the finals Monday at Dennington. The winning teams were Trevor Bolden and Peter Kampman, Chris Fox and Steve Gibbs, Daryl Andrew and Wayne Gleeson, David Wells and Hank Pelgrim, Allan Campbell and Billy Hunting and Paul Symmons and Allan Sullivan.
On Sunday, the West Coast Region over 60 singles were played at Camperdown. In the women’s final, Warrnambool’s Dianne Mugavin defeated Cobden’s Doreen Coverdale 21-9 to claim the title for the Western District division. In the men’s, Ray Hoy of City Memorial forfeited against Lionel Shelton from Portland. The final was won by Camperdown’s Gary Body, defeating Shelton 22-13 to hold the title for the Corangamite Division. The state final will be held at Deer Park on November 8 and 9.
Warrnambool Bowls has two more weeks of Friday twilight bowls to run. Men’s and women’s 100 up will be played under lights Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the next couple of weeks.
This week, the big clash in Saturday division one will be between last year’s preliminary finalists Koroit Blue at home to City Memorial Red. The big clash in Tuesday pennant will be Warrnambool Gold versus City Memorial Gold.
