That’s the assessment from Warrnambool Bowls Club bowls co-ordinator Paul O’Donnell, who spoke to The Standard as part of its Community Journalism Day on Tuesday.
“The club’s been around for over 125 years and it’s been pretty strong in the community throughout that with what they do,” he said.
“Both making the greens available to anyone who wants them, we provide free bowls for schools during their curriculum and we do a lot of work with people with a disability...an opportunity for them to have a go at it.
“We try and make bowls available to everyone of every age really.”
O’Donnell said Warrnambool had 200 registered members.
“We have lots of social members which potentially turn into fully-fledged playing members,” he said.
“That’s the aim of the club. We let them play on a Wednesday or a Friday if they’re social members, trying to encourage them. We also have barefoot programs to introduce people to bowls.”
