The recently-crowned Australian Supersport Champion will jump up a class to superbikes at Phillip Island as part of the Australian Moto GP this weekend.
Collins, 18, will race a BMW 1000cc for his team, Next Gen Motorsport.
The Warrnambool College student said the bike was tougher to control than the Suzuki 600cc he used for five of the six supersport championship rounds.
He jumped aboard the BMW bike in the final round.
“We did 309km/h at Phillip Island last time, that was our top speed,” Collins said.
“The Suzuki was 270km/h. It (the speed) doesn’t scare me. I choose to do it; it’s what I want to do. It’s a lot of fun.”
Collins said the BMW 1000cc was a bike he hoped to race consistently next season.
“The superbike is a lot harder to ride and more physical as well,” he said.
“The power makes it a lot harder. Next Gen Motorsport – I think they are the best team in the paddock and for them to take me on (is great).
“They want to develop me as a rider and get me to where I want to be.”
Collins will compete in four races at Phillip Island across Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
“They are 10-lap races, so shorter than what I normally do,” he said.
“(It’s probably) 1.30 a lap, so a pretty quick race which is good for me because I am not physically fit for the bike yet.”
