Faye Bolden scored a two on the last end to help Koroit Orange to a 68-67 win over reigning premier Warrnambool Gold, while Lorraine Shaw snared three shots to help top-grade newcomer Dennington Red account for City Memorial Green.
Dennington Red lead Rex Harris said the players remained at the clubrooms to celebrate their 75-74 result.
“The Dennington Red team was last year’s division two premiers,” he said.
“It’s was a very good opening round for the club. It was a good hitout against City Memorial who are probably one of the strongest clubs as far as mid-week pennant goes.”
Harris said Shaw was calm under pressure.
“She got the jack in the ditch to get three shots – we were two shots down,” he said.
“(City Memorial’s) Chrissy Hawker unfortunately couldn’t draw close enough.”
Lawn Tennis Green showed promise in its return to division one, falling eight shots short of Timboon Maroon.
Marj Fisher is hoping Lawn Tennis Green can hold its own in the top tier.
“We are hoping to improve on last year but we’ve gone up into division one, not because of our ability, but every club is entitled to have one team in, so we opted to,” she said.
“It will be a good experience for the newer bowlers.”
Fisher said Lawn Tennis Green was always looking for more women to play.
She said the Lake Pertobe-based club had three male bowlers in its Tuesday pennant side – Peter Honey, Ian Prout and Rob Treweek.
Fisher, whose rink fell 10 shots short of Andrea Swayn’s team, said there were positives out of the defeat.
“We were competitive but I wasn’t happy with my game,” she said.
“Fran Ryan played the best of us. We tried but we were just outdone.”
Swayn said it was a hard-fought battle to win the rink.
“There wasn’t much in it; it was a great game to play and could have gone either way,” she said.
“There were lots of measures.”
Swayn is hopeful Timboon Maroon can sneak into the top-four this season.
“We finished fifth last year and I think we were only two points out of the four, but we’ve lost a couple of ladies,” she said.
“They went back to division two but we’ve brought a couple of our newer bowlers (Pat Uebergang and Lyn Payne) up.
“We’ve made a few changes so we’re going to sit back for a few weeks and see how we go and take it from there.”
In other games, Terang Gold defeated Port Fairy Gold 67-56 and City Memorial Gold downed Mortlake Blue 89-65.
