Shearwater birds cross over each other as they come into land at Port Fairy so it’s fitting that a new sculpture erected in the town depicts them in full flight.

The sculpture of 10 birds, located at either side of the entrance to Griffiths Island, are made from quartz and granite stone and resin, and was installed on Thursday.
Friends of Griffiths Island management committee member Marten Syme said the group raised the money and came up with the design with sculptors Sherril and Don Stewart.
“The project is the culmination of work to educate visitors to the island about the short-tailed shearwaters as visitors are puzzled about the ‘rabbit burrows’ they see when walking, or wonder what the shearwater signs are for,” Mr Syme said.
Mr Stewart said he was pleased with the final product. “We tried to get the feeling of the birds in flight,” he said.
“As the shearwaters come back at night they always criss-cross the sky and that’s the effect we were after. I think we’ve achieved it so we’re pretty happy.”
