Jay Austin, of no fixed address, appeared in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Thursday, did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody until October 30.
Police charges revealed Austin allegedly went to his mother's home, stole $80 and then stole his father's 2005 Proton.
He then drove to Thomastown where he was involved in a $30 petrol drive-off at a service station, then did the same thing at Boort and Ararat.
Mr Austin is then alleged to have driven to Portland where he dumped the car.
He was arrested at a Portland address on Thursday, interviewed, charged and then appeared in court.
