Amelia’s Star’s price for the Melbourne Cup was slashed from $51 to $17 following the victory and $18 to $6 favourite for the Caulfield Cup after defeating Granddukeoftuscany and Kellstorm.
The two length win in the Cummings ensured she gets a start in the Melbourne Cup for Victoria’s leading trainer Darren Weir and pleased his Warrnambool stable foreman Jarrod McLean.
“Amelia’s Star gets a start in the Melbourne Cup. It saves a bit of worry about getting into the final field winning this race,” McLean said.
“All the staff at Warrnambool do great jobs but I’ve got to acknowledge the efforts of Brendan Eccles. He’s done all the work with Amelia’s Star and done a sensational job since she joined our stable.
“She had a tendon injury when we got her but doing light beach work has really helped her.”
Humidor, another of Weir’s Caulfield Cup hopes is also trained at his Warrnambool satellite stable. He was well beaten by champion mare Winx in the Turnbull Stakes but McLean thinks the five-year-old will have a change with gear for the Caulfield Cup.
“We were beaten by a champion,” McLean said. “Weiry will look at making a change or two to Humidor’s gear before the Caulfield Cup.”
The $3 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup will be run on October 21.
