Ryan’s twin brother Shaun is one of the three field umpires for the big clash between Richmond and Adelaide and the Warrnambool Cup-winning trainer will be at the MCG to watch his older twin umpire his sixth grand final.
“Shaun is 10 minutes older than me,” the 41-year-old said.
“I don’t follow the footy. Shaun asked me to go along.
“I thought I better because it’s a remarkable achievement to be the central umpire for the sixth time in a grand final.
“Our family is so proud of his achievements, not only in sport but in his life.
“I’m not sure what to expect because it’s the first time that I’ve been to a grand final.
“I suppose I will be like a lot of the fans and want Richmond to win because they are a Victorian side but I will be also keeping a close eye on how Shaun is umpiring.”
Last-start winner Julio was to have run in the $250,000 Inglis Cup at Caulfield on Sunday for Ryan but he decided to scratch the lightly raced four-year-old.
“There may not be many runners in the Inglis but it’s a strong race,” he said.
“It’s a lot stronger race than last year’s event. I think we’ll take Julio to Hamilton next Friday. It will be a lot easier than the Inglis.”
Black Heart Bart and Gailo Chop are the headline runners for the powerful Darren Weir Warrnambool satellite stable in the $750,000 Underwood Stakes on Sunday, while Warrnambool trainer Matthew Williams saddles up Turnitaround in a $120,000 race.
The Caulfield races get underway at 1pm.
