Detective Senior Constable Wayne Ryan, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said a potential aggravated burglary was reported to have been committed overnight Friday.
He said an intruder entered a home through an unlocked back door, walked through the house and left via the front door.
"It appears nothing was stolen and nothing was disturbed," he said.
"The three occupants of the home got up and investigated after hearing someone in their house and found the front door open."
Detective Senior Constable Ryan said forensic evidence had been collected and would be analysed.
"It would be in the best interests of the person who walked through the house to come forward," he said.
Anyone with information about the home invasion is requested to contact the Warrnambool police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
