The Harris Street-based club boasts an under 13 team, a senior side and two under 16 outfits in Sunday’s South West Victoria Football Association grand finals.

Warrnambool Wolves president Carlos Del Rio said his club’s spread of grand final teams was an indication of the growing strength of the sport in the south-west.

“I think it means a lot to our younger group to be where we are,” Del Rio told The Standard.

“We’re very proud as a club. To have four of our six teams in the regional league’s grand final is fantastic.”

Del Rio, a long-time soccer identity in the south-west, said the game was growing rapidly in and outside Warrnambool.

“There’s lots of kids playing out in the Port Fairy and Koroit sort of areas, so there’s definitely the interest,” he said.

“We’re very fortunate to have this many teams in the grand finals. It’s growing massively but we’re really happy we’re doing our bit for the game this area.”

While the grand final is set to be held at Warrnambool Rangers’ home base of Jones Oval, the South West Victoria Football Association held its preliminary finals in Hamilton.

The under 13 decider is set to kick start the action, with the first clash rolling in at 11.15am on Sunday.

“We’ve certainly spread it around the region this time,” Del Rio said.

“The old Warrnambool and District Soccer League had Harris Street as its base for this, because it has two pitches, but we’ve moved finals around this year.

“In future, we’ll look to take a game to Corangamite and even Southcombe Park in Port Fairy if we could get a soccer pitch in there.”
