A two-car accident at the Mortlake Road and Donovans Road intersection on Tuesday renewed calls from drivers to modify the “dangerous” spot.
VicRoads regional director Mark Koliba said he recognised the community had concerns about the safety of the intersection.
“VicRoads will work with the Victoria Police to identify how this crash occurred and will review this intersection to understand if it can be made safer,” he said.
Warrnambool police Sergeant Callum McKinnon said it occurred when a Hyundai Ix35, driven by a man in his 30s, turning into Donovans Road collided with a Nissan X Trail, driven by a 19-year-old travelling north on Mortlake Road.
Sergeant McKinnon said the accident occurred at 8.50am. Both cars were a write-off but there were no injuries. Motorists flooded The Standard’s Facebook page with their experiences.
Gayle Taylor said it was a terrible intersection and lights or a roundabout were needed "before someone is killed”.
Julie McLean has had close calls and tries to avoid the area. She called for traffic lights to be installed.
Lynn Goldstraw said it has “always been a shocker of an intersection”.
Cazz Fawcett said she has had near misses when turning left from Mortlake Road into Donovans Road. “Those facing me, and turning right into Donovans Road, actually start turning before I do. They don't want to wait.”
Warrnambool City Council city infrastructure director Scott Cavanagh said while there was “no serious crash history” over the past five years recorded at the intersection, council would work with VicRoads on any proposal to improve safety.
“The council has identified higher priority intersections along the Mortlake Road corridor including the intersection of Banyan and Cramer streets and the roundabout with Botanic Road, Jamieson Street and Moore Street,” Mr Cavanagh said.
