The 16-year-old’s versatility is shaping a bonus for the Roosters as they prepare to take on an in-form Cobden in the must-win clash at Gardens Oval.
South Warrnambool coach Mathew Buck said the talented teen had been playing predominantly up forward or on a wing in his four senior matches to date, but could spend more time through the midfield or in defence if needed.
“He’s got the ability to play anywhere … which is handy going into finals,” Buck said.
Atchison has been juggling a busy footy schedule this season, playing nine matches with the club’s premiership-winning under 16 side and making 10 appearances in the under 18.5 line-up in addition to his five senior matches.
He also played in the reserves’ side’s qualifying final loss last week, earning a call-up to the senior side again.
“He’s got real talent,” Buck said. “He kicks the ball really well and he’s nice and quick across the ground, but he’s also a pretty ferocious tackler, which means he can stand up to senior footy.”
The Roosters mentor also praised the efforts of another 16-year-old in Ethan Harvey, who has held down a regular spot in the senior line-up as a small forward, playing 13 matches this season.
“He’s an exciting talent; he kicks the ball really well and, a little bit like Cooper, he’s a really ferocious tackler.”
