The challenge was dismissed by seven judges unanimously, and survey forms asking people to have their say on same-sex marriage will be sent out from September 12.
Brophy Family and Youth Services’ ‘Safe In The South-West’ co-ordinator Lyn Eales said it was important for people to avoid misinformation and to look after themselves.
“We must get behind the ‘yes’ vote and send a message of support that all Australians should have the same opportunities for love, commitment and happiness,” she said.
She said she was concerned the survey outcome would not be binding on Coalition MPs.
Ms Eales advised those in the LGBTI community to take a breather, have a detox from social media and keep up social connections.
“It’s going to be a long eight weeks and we ask the community to lend their support,” she said.
“Let’s have a respectful conversation,” she said.
Member for Wannon Dan Tehan said he would voting “No” in the survey but would vote in the parliament according to the survey’s national outcome.
Mr Tehan said he believed in the traditional definition of marriage but had always said he would honour the wishes of the Australian people.
