Sergeant Callum McKinnon, of the Warrnambool police highway patrol unit, said the 19-year-old was driving a new Mazda CX-3 at 9.30pm on Monday night when she lost control between Winslow and Mailors Flat.
"She was using her mobile phone to take a Snapchat video through the front windscreen while going through a right-hand bend on the Warrnambool-Caramut Road in excess of 150km/h," he said.
"She had done a good job negotiating the bend but the passenger-side tyre has gone off the gravel shoulder and she’s continued off the road."
Sergeant McKinnon said the new model car hit trees which probably saved the Dennington woman's life.
"She's ploughed into low hanging branches alongside the tree trunks and they've acted like a sponge, cushioning the impact," he said.
"They've spun the car around or flipped it end-over-end, we’re still not sure. The car was travelling backwards when the rear has hit a power pole. The Mazda is a complete write-off."
The highway patrol unit officer-in-charge said the P-plater was not injured but due to the speed of the crash was kept in the Warrnambool Base Hospital overnight for observation.
A blood sample was also taken and police are awaiting the results of an analysis.
"In terms of contributing factors there's distraction, speed, inexperience, driving at night and possibly alcohol," Sergeant McKinnon said.
"For stupid driver behaviour there's not many other boxes to tick.
"It's unbelievable, she's walked out without a scratch. There were bits of the car everywhere.”
Investigating officer Senior Constable Luke Hunter said police found the teen’s mobile phone and the video was repeating on the screen.
"The footage is unbelievable, I've never seen anything like it," he said.
"The driver is yet to be interviewed, we're giving her a couple of days to settle down.”
Senior Constable Hunter said the video would be included in the police brief of evidence and potential charges included driving in a dangerous manner and conduct endangering serious injury or death.
