The Lifeline Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) two-day workshop will be held in Warrnambool on Thursday and Friday.

Lifeline South West Vic fundraising and sustainability manager Bess Slater said ASIST was founded on the principle that everyone can make a difference in preventing suicide. 

“The more people in the community who have suicide intervention training, the more likely it is they will be able to identify someone at risk and intervene to keep them safe,” Ms Slater said. 

South West Vic ASIST trainers Linda Holland and Carol Cashion will host the sessions and participants must attend both days to receive the LivingWorks ASIST Certificate. 

Ms Slater said just as workplaces had a first aid officer it would be ideal to also have an ASIST trained person on staff to identify and intervene when someone needed help.

Topics covered include understanding the ways attitudes affect views on suicide and interventions and providing guidance and suicide first-aid to a person who is at risk.

Participants will be taught how to identify the key elements of an effective suicide safety plan and the actions required. The value of improving and integrating suicide prevention resources in the community will also be covered. 

Attendees will be trained to recognise other important aspects of suicide prevention including life-promotion and self-care.
