About 300 trees and shrubs have been planted around the springs to offset the carbon emissions of Moyne Shire Council’s vehicle fleet. The Panmure Action Group was awarded a council grant earlier this year to undertake the work which began in June.

The group’s secretary Lisette Mill said more than 40 people from different user groups  were involved in the project which was necessary for future preservation.

“After flooding in 2011 where the water was as high as the bridge, and again from time to time when the water rises, plantations need to be replaced,” Mrs Mill said.

She said the plant species were indigenous to the site and would benefit neighbouring sporting facilities.

“The trees will act as shade and wind breaks around the Panmure Football Netball Club oval,” she said. 

“In five years’ time they’ll be about four or five metres tall and benefit an area that has lots of user groups.”
