Wareham was one of 16 players picked, joining big names such as injured Australian captain Meg Lanning in the Spirit squad.
“It’s such a great opportunity to play and learn from the best in Australia,” she said.
“I’ve always strived for it. It’s pretty surreal to have it happen this early.”
Wareham, 18, will juggle state duties with year 12 study at Mortlake College.
The leg spinner and top-order bat will sit her VCE exams in early November – a month into the Spirit’s one-day format campaign.
“A few other girls who are from the country are in the squad and there is another girl still at school as well, so I guess we’ll go through the roller-coaster of emotions together,” she said.
“I am thinking about going to university in Melbourne next year. I guess that will make everything (like training) more central for me and more accessible.”
Wareham captured the attention of state selectors after representing Women’s Big Bash League club Melbourne Renegades.
The former Western Waves star – a regular Victorian representative at junior level – has also played South West Cricket division one matches for her home club Mortlake.
Cavendish export Emma Kearney, who is a key player for AFLW club Western Bulldogs, was not retained as part of the Vic Spirit squad.
