A portrait of the 91-year-old former farmer was entered into this year’s Warrnibald prize by his Lyndoch personal care worker Jane Moloney.
Ms Moloney said painting Mr Brodie was her chance to thank him for his years of giving.
“I knew he’d be chuffed to be painted,” she said. “He was a person who always volunteered and gave a lot of his own time and I think those people deserve to be recognised.”
Ms Moloney who has been employed at Lyndoch Living for eight years, said she knew of Mr Brodie long before he joined the facility in 2014.
“I knew of him all my life through my dad,” she said. “I think everyone in and around Wangoom knew of Lindsay and his brother Bill.
“They were tinkers. They loved mechanical engines and trying to work out how things work.
“He and his brother Bill were always known for their ingenuity.
“They were always creating stuff.
“Lindsay is still fascinated by technology. He loves his i-pad and his brother’s drone.
“Back in the day you couldn’t just come into the city to get parts and things for the farm so you’d go to Lindsay and Bill to get things fixed or replaced.”
Ms Moloney said the veteran Wangoom CFA volunteer finally received public recognition for his volunteering in 2013 when he was awarded a life member medal by former premier Denis Napthine.
“The story has it that he and his brother Bill were at the Warrnambool Fire Brigade back in the ‘50’s scavenging for parts and grabbed a nozzle and thought ‘why don’t we put a nozzle on the front of the fire hose?’ and that’s what they did,” Ms Moloney said.
“I’ve heard that the cricket oval and hall in Wangoom had no power so they rigged up a mobile generator,” she said.
“This was done well before its time. I imagine he’d be one of those people who’d never let you down.”
Ms Moloney’s painting entitled Wangoom Legend is her fifth entry in the city’s annual art prize. Voting is still open in the public choice award.
