The medals of Purnim-born Captain Saunders, who was the first commissioned indigenous soldier, will take pride of place at the Warrnambool RSL following their purchase at auction in Sydney recently.
The Purnim Community Group bought the eight medals – one of two legitimate sets in existence – with the assistance of the Gwen and Edna Jones Foundation, Anzac House, the Warrnambool RSL and Moyne Shire Council.
Warrnambool RSL president John Miles said a special cabinet was would be built soon to house Captain Saunders’ medals and other important pieces of the local war memorabilia.
“It’s very important that these medals are brought out (on display) and people realise what our indigenous people when through in the war,” Mr Miles said.
The eight medals were purchased for a hammer price of $9000.
