Primary schools in Warrnambool City and the Corangamite and Moyne shires are taking part in National Tree Day celebrations.
Grade five and six students at Our Lady Help of Christians in Warrnambool set the ball rolling on Friday planting 600 units of grasses and succulents with support from Wannon Water employees.
The students have adopted the site along a Wannon Water sewer main as an annual project.
All plants were indigenous to the Warrnambool coast and were sourced locally.
On Sunday, National Tree Day activities will move to the Flume where Coastcare Landcare are hoping to get 200 volunteers involved in the planting of over 2700 native trees and plants.
In Moyne Shire, four schools will be involved in tree planting while a community planting will be held in Kirkstall on Sunday. The plan is to plant 500 native trees at this gathering.
In Corangamite, Noorat and Skipton primary schools and Skipton Kindergarten were involved in tree planting activities.
On Sunday, the Terang Dry Lake committee is inviting community members to join them for tree planting at the new wetland area, just off Foley Street. Tree planting starts at 9am and goes through to 2pm.
The aim is to beautify the public space, but also regenerate the area by increasing the biodiversity and providing suitable habitat.
