Detective Sergeant Leigh Wheatley, of the Warrnambool Sexual Offences And Child Abuse Investigation Team, previously confirmed a statement of complaint was made to a team member in late April.
It is understood the allegation relates to an incident at South Australia's Oakbank carnival held over the Easter long weekend.
Warrnambool SOCIT detectives last week forwarded a file to the Mount Barker crime investigation bureau.
A Mount Barker police spokesman said on Wednesday that file - which included a transcribed version of the complainant's statement and a briefing note - would be examined.
He said it was likely that the matter would be referred back to Warrnambool SOCIT detectives to carry out further investigations.
At that stage it's likely the case file would return back to South Australia for any possible charges to be laid.
