A Victoria Police arson squad chemist travelled to Portland on Tuesday, examined the scene and determined the cause of the fire was suspicious.
Portland police detectives are currently following up lines of inquiry.
The brick home at the corner of Portland's Wellington Road and Willunga Street received extensive damage in a fire on Monday night.
Patrolling Portland police uniform officers raised the alarm about 8.30pm on Monday night.
The Portland fire brigade was notified and it took about 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
It's likely the damage is so severe the dwelling may have to be demolished and replaced.
Anyone who saw anyone or anything suspicious in the Wellington Road and Willunga Street area is asked to contact the Portland police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
