Senior Constable Paul McGovern of Warrnambool police said the boy was the front seat passenger in a small Honda that hit the rear of a four wheel drive vehicle that was stopped at a school crossing in Jamieson Street about 8.30am.
Senior Constable McGovern said the driver of the Honda told police she had not seen the stationary four wheel drive because the sun was in her eyes.
He said the boy was taken to hospital but he was not seriously injured.
No one else was injured in the accident.
Senior Constable McGovern said the driver of the Honda had just dropped off another child near the school shortly before the accident.
He said police inquiries into the accident were pending.
Police closed Jamieson Street for less than an hour while emergency services dealt with the accident.
A soaking agent was used to absorb radiator fluid that was spilt on to Jamieson Street.
