The recruitment of Dr Jun Parker rounds out the team of three that also includes doctors Peter Reid and Geoff Hool.
Dr Parker was born in Japan before moving to Adelaide where he completed his schooling.
But his links to the Western District are strong.
Part of his general practice and anaesthetics training took place at Lorne, Airey’s Inlet, Bannockburn, Ballarat and Hamilton.
“I appreciate the joys and challenges of rural medicine,” Dr Parker said.
“I’d like to show young doctors that rural health can be a fulfilling and interesting career.
“I enjoyed working in different parts of rural Australia but I decided to come back here and take on this position in Portland.
“It‘s a way of saying thanks to the Western Victorian community for its part in training me up to where I am now.”
Dr Parker’s main role at PDH will be in anaesthetics but he will also work as a general practitioner at Active Health Portland.
He also has training in palliative care.
“Anaesthetics are where the health needs of the community are but I enjoy all aspects of medicine,” he said.
Cardiac services at PDH have also received a boost with the purchase of a new echocardiogram.
Consultant cardiologist Dr Naveen Sharma said the new machine was an important addition to PDH’s cardiac services.
“We have a lot of people with chest pain and heart attacks and previously local people had to travel to Warrnambool to undergo this procedure,” Dr Sharma said.
