Acting Sergeant Bec Miles, of Cobden police, said the accident happened on a notorious bend on the Cobden-Warrnambool Road that had claimed many lives over the years.
“They were very, very lucky,” she said.
The driver, a woman in her 20s, told police a car travelling in the opposite direction had veered on to her side of the road and forced her into the paddock about 4.25pm, she said.
Acting Sergeant Miles said the car went down an embankment and landed on its side, the muddy paddocks acting to slow down the car and give it a soft landing.
“The mud has taken the speed out of it. It was a very lucky escape,” she said.
A farmer used his tractor to help pull the vehicle from the paddock.
Police are asking any witnesses, or for anyone who saw a silver Holden Commodore ute heading towards Cobden after the accident, to come forward.
Acting Sergeant Bec Miles said that while returning from the accident scene she intercepted a speeding male driver on the Cobden-Camperdown Road doing 134km/h while it was raining and visibility was poor.
He was issued with an infringement notice and will lose his licence for a month.
