Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said they were called to Mortlake Road about 4.22pm where they treated a woman for hand and leg injuries.
He said the woman had been travelling back to Warrnambool after the attack when the ambulance was called to the Hopkins Highway near the intersection with Conheadys Road.
Mr Mullen said the injuries occurred at a different location to where the ambulance was called.
She was taken to Warrnambool hospital in a stable condition.
