Leishman, Jason Day, Adam Scott, Aaron Baddeley and Andrew Dodt were four shots off the pace to be tied for 26th at Royal Birkdale.
American trio Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka and Matt Kuchar each fired five-under par to be joint leaders.
Leishman recovered after a shaky start – he bogeyed the opening hole – to keep himself in contention.
He produced four birdies on the fifth, seventh, 12th and 17th holes.
A further two bogeys on the sixth and 16th stopped him from being closer to the leaders.
The world number 34 was the best-performed of his group with American Phil Mickelson, who was runner-up in 2016, and Italian Francesco Molinari both tied for 90th at three-over.
Leishman rates the British Open his most favoured major on the PGA circuit.
